Site Plan Development
North Park Street Graduate Housing
Dartmouth Real Estate Office
Hanover, New Hampshire
Designed by William Rawn Associates, the North Park Street Graduate Housing complex is within easy walking distance to the Dartmouth campus and provides housing for first year, Arts & Science graduate students. The housing complex has a total of 11 buildings made up of four basic building types including three Lodge Houses (2 1/2 story structures in a shingle-style vernacular) intended to be reminiscent of large single-family residences. The complex also includes four Carriage Houses (two story clapboard buildings) two Cottages one of which accommodates a small lounge area and laundry facility for the complex. Rounding out the development are two Gateway Buildings built into the adjacent hillside.
The sensitive development of the project site was critical to the successful implementation of this project. The site is wedged between College Park, a cherished campus open space and a quiet neighborhood along the east edge of campus. Fundamental to obtaining support for the project, was the assurance that the complex of buildings would not compromise the character of the adjacent neighborhood or the historical integrity of College Park. Proper setback of the buildings and the preservation of existing trees and natural features such as rock outcroppings were perceived to be critical components of the development program. To further reduce the impact of development on the site’s natural character, parking for twenty-three cars was incorporated into the building footprints thereby eliminating the need to create large areas of surface parking.
