The Evolution of the Dartmouth Campus
Dartmouth College
Hanover, New Hampshire
Before embarking on a period of major expansion, Dartmouth College commissioned Saucier + Flynn to develop a comprehensive study of the campus' evolution. Beginning with its inception in 1770, the study revealed five periods of significant campus expansion and discussed the historical context in which key planning and design decisions were made. Planning and design decisions made within each of these periods contribute to the overall organization of the contemporary campus. An understanding of these issues will help guide future campus expansions ensuring a seamless transition between the central campus and developing precincts. This study became the foundation for the development of the Campus Landscape Master Plan.
