Landscape Master Plan
Dartmouth College
Hanover, New Hampshire
The Dartmouth campus is unique. Even after two hundred and thirty-one years of growth, it continues to express its colonial heritage. The preservation of that legacy is critical to the preservation of Dartmouth's identity. Yet, the campus is ever changing, continuously evolving to meet the needs of its contemporary occupants. Accommodating the present and anticipating the future is also key to Dartmouth's identity. Developing planning and management strategies that successfully resolve the dilemma of preservation and expansion begins with a thorough understanding of the landscape's evolution.
In an effort to facilitate and guide sound campus landscape development, Saucier + Flynn analyzed the historical evolution of the campus to ascertain the fundamental organization and aesthetic principles that make the landscape unique. They also conducted an analysis of the contemporary campus to objectively observe its current state and to better understand the issues the campus stewards confront on a day-to-day basis.
In conjunction with the Landscape Master Plan, Saucier + Flynn developed a set of Landscape Construction Standards and Landscape Design Guidelines.
