Athletic Fields Planting Plan
Kimball Union Academy
Meriden, New Hampshire
In the spring of 2006, Kimball Union Academy undertook the development of a sports complex consisting of five new athletic fields. The centerpiece of the complex is a new, state of the art, artificial turf field designed to accommodate competitive field events in the early spring and late fall. The project also entailed new baseball, football and soccer fields plus a new practice field. The project site lies adjacent the primary entrance to campus and a major gateway to the historic village. Alleviating neighbor’s concerns over noise, light pollution and unattractive views was critical to the successful permitting of the project. Saucier + Flynn worked closely with the client, the project team, and various consultants to ensure that the new facility would satisfactorily meet the needs of the school while respecting the visual integrity of the campus and village.
The Landscape Plan encompassed the restoration and enhancement of a riparian buffer, the development of pedestrian connections between the new fields and central campus. It also addressed the enhancement of streetscape design along Main Street and along Route 120, a major thoroughfare through the village.
