New England Center

Durham, New Hampshire

The New England Center for Continuing Education recently embarked on a plan to expand its exterior dining facilities. The Center is located in a wooded site on the grounds of the University of New Hampshire. When the building was built it was sensitively integrated with the woodland. SIte disturbance was minimal allowing the building to blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. The building is unique in that the design is based on a series of triangular modules. The triangular module allowed for increased flexibility in an effort to design around trees and rocks.

Informed by the triangular modules, Saucier + Flynn's plan for the exterior dining area accommodates approximately one hundred diners. Native stone walls define the edge of the dining area and match existing walls on the site. A raised woodland garden will furthur enhance the area and screen the terrace from an adjacent sorority.
