Landscape Master Plan
Tyler Place
Highgate Springs, Vermont
The Tyler Place is a family resort located on the shore of Lake Champlain. The resort began operations in the early forties and through the years developed a loyal clientele. However, the early nineties saw a rise in the popularity of environmental tourism and a waning of traditional family oriented vacations. In response, the resort initiated a planning study to integrate environmental education into its recreational programming.
Traditionally, recreational activities focused on swimming and boating. However, one of the resort's most important assets, Kingfisher Bay, was gradually being transformed into marshland. Wetland regulations prohibited the dredging of the bay so Saucier+Flynn worked with the client to develop an alternative recreational use for the area. Capitalizing on the resort's extensive land holdings, Saucier+Flynn developed a conceptual master plan depicting a network of hiking trails, campsites, and interpretive centers. An elegant boardwalk and interpretive station were designed to revitalize the recreational use of Kingfisher Bay.
