Layers of the Landscape Competition
Charleston, South Carolina

In July of 2004, Saucier + Flynn received the Honor Award for their entry in the “Layers of the Landscape” national design competition in Charleston, South Carolina.

Sponsored by the Charleston Horticultural Society and the Charleston Civic Design Center, the competition challenged participants to define appropriate devices to educate the public about the changes over time to Charleston’s landscape. The entries were to provide ideas for a project approach that would effectively and creatively deliver an educational message at various historic sites throughout the city.  The sponsors encouraged solutions integrating issues of art, archaeology, horticulture, landscape architecture, urban design, architecture and graphic design.

The Judges noted that Saucier + Flynn’s winning entry was:

Historic and site specific and did not include generic strategy. Their system became another layer at each of the five demonstration sites and thus affixed a time.

The “Layers of the Landscape” project is ongoing and the sponsors are working to implement Saucier + Flynn’s design proposal for the Market Street site – an interpretive garden juxtaposed between the City Market and Charleston Harbor.
