Entrance & Parking Lot Improvements
Montshire Museum
Norwich, Vermont
Wedged between the Connecticut River and Interstate 91, the site of the Montshire Museum presented Saucier + Flynn, Ltd. with an interesting design challenge.
The project site was bounded on the west by a steep wooded hillside and on the east by railroad tracks. Spatially confined, the site allowed little opportunity to reconfigure the existing entrance drive or visitor’s parking lot. Working within these constraints, Saucier + Flynn developed a practical layout that was well-ordered and provided safe passage for pedestrians and vehicles alike. A varied palette of indigenous planting material combined with a thoughtfully devised pedestrian walk and spatially well defined entrance plaza creates a strong sense of place and a powerful sense of arrival to the museum.
